Flight Instructor Certificates

Becoming a flight instructor is a great way of taking your enthusiasm for aviation and experience, and teaching others the joy of flight. Being a flight instructor also enhances your knowledge of the rules and regulations in aviation, your pilot skills and safety preparing you for more advanced aviation careers.

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for a Flight Instructor Certificate, you must be at least 18 years of age (at the time of checkride) and read, speak and understand the English language, and hold a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating or airline transport pilot certificate. In addition, students will be required to pass a "fundamentals of instructing" knowledge test (unless you hold a teachers certificate (7th grade or higher) or employed as a teacher at an accredited college/university) and an aeronautical knowledge test; and meet the flight proficiency and aeronautical experience in accordance with FAA Flight Instructor certificate requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions?

I just passed my initial flight instructor checkride. Are there any limitations on who I can start training with?

Yes. You as a flight instructor will be responsible for understanding what privileges, limitations and qualifications, records and additional flight training you will need before providing students with flight training and/or endorsements.

Reference: Subpart H — Flight Instructors Other than Flight Instructors With a Sport Pilot Rating.

Does a flight instructor certificate have an expiration date?

Yes. A flight instructor certificate expires on the 24th calender month from the month of issuance. For example, if you received your flight instructor certificate on March 15th, 2014, your flight instructor certificate would expire on March 31, 2016.

My flight instructor certificate has expired, how do I renew my flight instructor certificate?

Once a flight instructor certificate expires it can only be reinstated. To reinstate a flight instructor certificate you will need to take a flight instructor certification practical test (checkride) or a flight instructor certification practical test (checkride) for an additional rating. The reinstatement is NOT a reexamination of the initial flight test. Please consult your PTS ratings task table for additional information on which tasks are required. A reinstatement of one rating on a flight instructor certificate renews or reinstates all privileges existing on the certificate.

Can I select the examiner I would prefer for my initial CFI flight test?

No. The Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) will select a random examiner upon our request for an exam date. Certification for an initial flight instructor is always free of cost when conducted by the FAA examiner; however, in most cases, a designated pilot examiner (DPE) will be appointed and an examiner fee will be required.
